In the realm of International Politics analysis, the concept of civil society was revitalized in the 1980s as a way to conceptualise resistance to state oppression, on the other hand and especially for African countries under the FMI and World Bank’s Structural Adjustment Policies, civil society was presented as the symbol of the faith in the private sector key importance for the political and economic health of the country. In this article the multiple meanings of State and Civil Society are considered taking into account African historical experiences.
